Safety of Chiropractic

Chiropractic care is recognized as a safe, effective, non-invasive treatment for patients suffering from neuromusculoskeletal conditions causing pain. Chiropractic has an excellent safety record, and while there are risks associated with chiropractic care, they are very small.

The safety of chiropractic treatment can be somewhat derived by a study conducted by the Canadian Medical Association that centered on malpractice data. The results showed that 134 million adjustments were performed between 1988 and 1997, with only 23 cases filed involving stroke or serious adverse neurological condition.

A separate study on the safety of chiropractic treatment published in the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association found 13 documented cerebrovascular accidents occurring in chiropractic patients over a five-year period with some 50 million cervical adjustments performed.

Both studies conclude that chiropractic care and treatment is a safe and effective way to treat conditions of the musculoskeletal system.

IS CHIROPRACTIC CARE EFFECTIVE?

According to the Consumer Reports Health Ratings Center’s 2011 report, Chiropractic medicine outperformed all other back pain treatments, including prescription pain medication, deep tissue massage, yoga and exercise regiments, and over-the-counter medicines and therapies. The same report in 2013 rated Doctor’s of Chiropractic medicine as the highest rated healthcare practitioner for treating back pain, ahead of physical therapists, physician specialists (i.e. neurologists, neurosurgeons, and orthopaedists), and primary care physicians.

It is clear, chiropractic medicine is working to effectively treat patient’s and the underlying conditions causing their pain. The reports of patient satisfaction are a good indication of how well chiropractic care works to treat pain, but more, the year to year growth in both practitioners, and in patients, tells a story that more people are turning to Chiropractic medicine and alternative therapies to treat their painful conditions.
